I review the Kindle ebook reader from Amazon. This is the second generation Kindle that comes in a 6" size that I review, here and a 9" size called the Kindle DX.

So, here's the down and dirty:
The Great
The Kindle will supposedly hold 1,500 books -- not sure if it will or not. It's based on memory, so longer books will take up more space. I can't imagine needing to have 1,500 books on it -- you can manage your "library" from Amazon, so if there's a book you have read, don't want on the Kindle or whatever, you can "archive" it and keep it off the Kindle until you're ready to add it back into the library.
Navigation is super simple and fast
Note-taking/highlighting/bookmarking!! -- This was a major concern for me. I love to take notes, highlight, underline, earmark pages and so on. I was afraid an electronic book reader like the Kindle would fail in this functionality. Not only does it succeed beyond my expectations, it takes note taking to a whole new level by allowing you to see all your notes, highlights, and bookmarks for a book in a single place! No more thumbing through a book to find that one note you needed to reference. I love it! Also, it could not be any easier to actually take a note or highlight -- literally, the click of a button.
The screen/characters are awesome!! The Kindle ebook "print" looks very real. Some liken it to newspaper print -- OK, whatever. I just like it. It reads like an actual book. I actually thought the "screensaver" that comes on when you put it to sleep (that's how it arrives, in sleep mode) was a sticker. I literally tried to peel it off! Theoretically, it reduces eye-strain -- I haven't experienced any eye-strain, but we'll come back to that topic in a minute.
No glare issues! Not only can you read the Kindle in the direct sun, it doesn't matter what angle you choose to read it. Nice when you're laying in a hammock on a Sunday afternoon, on your side, really only half-reading.
Search! Yes, every book on the Kindle is searchable! This is awesome! I have two versions of the Bible in my Kindle and if I want to find a specific verse, I can just search for some of the key terms. Imagine if you could do that with some of your favorites that are huge tomes with little gems hidden, throughout!
The Good
Over 350,000 books available for the Kindle -- and that's still not enough! I have found several books that I want that are not yet available. Now, Amazon is continually coming out with new books available for the Kindle, so I hope they come out, soon. I've found that it's mostly reference-type and more obscure books, but I've also been shocked by a few that are not available, such as the entire Harry Potter series! I know, I know...but I love Harry Potter! They are fun books to read and I can get through them quickly. I'm very surprised Scholastic (Rowling's publisher) has not made these available in Kindle format.
No back-light!!! In spite of how much I LOVE my Kindle, this one really chaps my behind. Supposedly, it was done to avoid creating eye-strain -- playing to the core "readers" group that Amazon is targeting. I am an avid reader and I don't want a "clip-on" light to read my ELECTRONIC books! Seriously, for the few times I need a back-light, eye-strain should not be an issue.
Sony's also made a Kindle competitor, but I buy all my books from Amazon, anyway, so I didn't see any reason to consider the Sony. It's the same price and Sony blows (personal opinion).

I've thought about buying one, but am concerned that the 6" screen is too small. Do you find it big enough? Or do you think the larger screen size of the DX would be better (if less portable)?

The DX looks huge to me when I see it in person. I find the 6" to be the perfect size -- just a little bigger than a mass paperback and a little smaller than a standard hard cover. Remember, you can change the text size at the touch of a button. Also, the newer Kindles allow you to see the text in landscape mode, so that makes it seem like a bigger page, too.
