After my wife wrote this song and my son recorded it in our studio, I kept seeing the images of "that day" in my mind. When I saw the incredible documentary by Steeplechase Films, New York: The Center of the World (http://ricburns.com), I had to go down to my edit suite and put images to the music. This is the result..... - David

"ON THAT DAY"

Music and lyrics written on 9/21/01 by Clover Lea

It was a morning just like all the rest.
The sunrise lit the skies, as they got dressed.
They said, "I love you." to the ones they kissed.
Leaving behind the safety of their nests,
they flew away.
(On that day...)

With plans and promises to be fulfilled,
they hurried off into the waiting world.
They had no idea any one would will
for them to die, for them to all be killed
on that day.
On that day.

[CHORUS]
On that day, unlike other days,
their watches all stood still,
as on that day
their living passed away.

And on that day, unlike other days,
we watched and held our children.
Heavy hearts. No words to say...
On that day.
On that day.

It is the morning of all of the rest,
the hearts of nations facing toward the test:
the choice to sacrifice for what is best,
to realize and humbly to confess:
We need to love...
(On this day)

For only love removes the face of fear.
Nothing to fear if we know God is here.
Sad that this takes such crisis to come clear,
to shock our souls to shining through the tears,
to rise above...
On this day.

[CHORUS]
On this day, unlike other days
God watches, standing still.
On this day, as time tick, ticks away.
And on this day, unlike other days,
we "Come together, Children,"
learning how to pray...
On this day...

Instrumental Bridge: "God bless America, my home sweet..."

Learning how to pray,
freedom's way.
Learning how to say,
"Father, have your way."
What a price to pay...
Precious seeds that lay
buried in the earth.
What to do but pray,
their sacrifice will birth:
blossomings of peace,
fruits of righteousness,
freedom's holiness....
On this day.

"As a writer/musician, I surprised myself when, for over a week after the tragedies, I wrote nothing and said little. Usually I have plenty to say, and it often emerges as song, epistle, or poem. But it felt as if I had all my feelings of response locked up within me...until one night, over a week later, when I couldn't sleep. I jumped out of bed with the first two lines of the song, which would become, over the next few hours, "On That Day.

No stranger to crisis, I live on that little Caribbean island whose volcano has recently devoured our only town and left 2/3 of the island unhabitable. I know the depth of loss and the pain of never again being able to "go back there," because "there" is gone forever."

* Clover Lea has lived with her family for the past 21 years on the tiny volcanic island, Montserrat, in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean. She has found this lush, fruitful environment to be compellingly conducive to writing. Song writing is what she finds the most satisfying, as she, herself, is a musician.

Not one to be content with what is commonplace, Clover searches in life for what is both poignant and beautiful. Her discoveries are often only truly shared and expressed via the union of words with music.

Clover's videographer husband, David, has created a video editing suite and also a recording studio on their property where she and their son, Sun Brother, compose and produce a variety of both lyrical and instrumental songs.

  • Thank you for sending me this. A powerful memorial. ( I used to work in the World Trade Center, Tower 1, giving seminars on a regular basis. Last time I was there was a few weeks before tragedy struck). Gunnar (Montreal)

  • Your family created a beautiful memorial to those who lost their lives on that day and is a treasure to all of us who lived through that day. I thank you for your testament of love. I ask that our Father in Heaven continue to bless you and your family.

  • A very nice and warm song. We were happy to receive a copy when vi visited Montserrat early January 2002. Thank You from Ingvild and Olav, Norway.

  • Beautiful song Clover. My son's best friend's sister Melanie died in the tower on that day when working in the States from the UK.

A wonderful tribute to all who died on that day.

  • It's hard not to relive the emotions of that day. My prayers are with everyone who lost someone as the anniversary is near.
