Northern Territory Energy Minister Kon Vatskalis addresses a meeting called by opponents of a uranium mining exploration lease 25 km from Alice Springs in March 2009. Mr Vatskalis' government granted an exploration lease to a consortium of Cameco and Paladin over the Angela-Pamela lease. Opponents of the mine have been vocal, and supporters quiet ... despite a poll conducted by Cameco last month which Cameco said showed more than 50 per cent of the town's residents supported the idea of the mine. Much of the opposition expressed in letters to the editors of local newspapers has been on the basis of opposition to the nuclear cycle, with the most significant local concern being over perceived threats to the town's underground water supply.
