The question posed at the Gospel Coalition LA Regional Conference 2010, "What is the Gospel and how does it work?" Dr. Don Carson answers in this 2010 conference series. In Pt 2, Dr. Carson takes an in depth look at Romans 3:21-26.
@brendos444 - just read your comment.... I'm sorry to say but this comment is an unsupported aligator. chomp, chomp, chomp, chomping at the bit. Now either qualify or retract it.
just watched this vid again.... terrible exposition of Romans 3:25, partly due to a poor translation. "Justice" should be "righteousnes" so that God demonstrates his own righteouness, not justice. Thus Carson's criticism of the translation of 3:22, "faithfulness of Jesus" instead of "faith in Jesus", is baseless.
And I think Carson misrepresents Paul's argument in Romans. The opening chapters of Romans are classic covenant theology passages. Righteousness means faithfulness to the covenant, not moral virtue. This is clear from Paul's comments on Abraham. So when Paul says that no one is righteous, it means that no one has remained faithful to the covenant. Not that there is absolutely no moral virtue in anyone.
I think some Protestants like Carson have completely misunderstood humanity. Man was created in the image of God. Why is it that man can do good things from pure motives? Because they are made in his image and his image has never been lost in man. Sin remains and disfigures God's humanity, but we remain creatures made in his image. total depravity is never taught in scripture. That is why he gets no where when trying to explain total depravity to intellligent students. Because it isnt true.
you are living the gospel when you help those in need. You really think that by proclaiming the gospel in the hope of getting some sort of intellectual affirmation or mental ascent is really what the NT teaches? No rather you just do what Christ commands. It's time to stop talking about the gospel and starting doing it!The plight of these homeless ppl is probably desparate. They need food and shelter and its a wonderful witness for Christians simply to be feeding them. denigrating them is shameful
@brendos444 I think you need to listen again. There was nothing hateful there, unless you really don't understand the plight of man, in which case I think you REALLY need to listen again. Giving them food and clothing and shelter is fine and good - but you can't call it holistic ministry if you're not also sharing the gospel. Anymore than you can call it holistic ministry if you are giving them the gospel and then not caring for their physical needs.
Carson's hateful comments against those people who help the homeless is absolutely disgraceful. God is pleased when we "do justice and love mercy" not because we want others to be saved, tho of course we do, but because that is who we are in Christ and we just do these things because of Christ's love. So you don't have to attach some sort of faith statement when you help the poor or insist that they believe what u do. U just help them regardless!
@brendos444 What about in James 2:10 when it says that if you break one, you break them all?
