This is one for anyone who appreciates alternative holiday making! My mate Erik designed this portable super-hammock-thing (referred to as "the tree tent" although not developed as far as to have any roof at this stage). He was very interested in making more use of trees, and the idea of urban camping in trees, so when I said I was going to London, he was keen for me to try the thing out there. My visit also happened to coincide with a large event at the Area 10 artist space in Peckham, where similar designs were being exhibited, so I was given the assignment of camping in a tree in central London before handing the "tent" over to Dimitri and Joel from Area 10.
If it hadn't been for the fact that I lost my passport, and couldn't get home to Norway when planed, I would never have taken the time to visit Area 10 and attend the event. Fate had it that I did get to see the event, and to meet some of the wonderful and creative dudes behind the project in Peckham, and I have since been back with other projects from Bergen and the Wrap arts centre.
I chose to camp in London Fields because I lived in that neighbourhood for several years and The Pub On The Park seemed like a very appropriate place to meet the people from Area 10. Before I got to the park I went out to an event at the ICA with my mate Paul, who tried to persuade me against the tree tent thing. He thought someone would probably kill me. I know people have been killed around there - but seriously people: London isn't that dangerous if you know half the score.
Yep - this ones an oldie!

  • is it on sale yet would love one of these

  • @TheHayden321 Well Eric has disappeared, but I did recently start building a new one. A lot of rope splicing and other stuff that I find time consuming and rather boring... First try didn't feel safe, so I'm re-building it with more attention to the original design. That one was given to the guys at "Area 10" and I don't know what has happened to it now.

Anywayz, I'll post a "how to build a tree tent" video when I'm sure I've got it right, but I won't be producing them commercially in a hurry!

    High as a kite.

  • Fantastic. I did the same just last week!

  • Great idea anything that will get you up off the ground. Here in USA we have wild hoggs that are getting prevalent getting up off the ground is wise a hammock elevates you some sure you can take a hammock up into the canopy but you would need some sort of safety device to insure you dont come tumbling down. I watched a video of a stealth camper that hoisted herself up a tree set up a hammock and was not detected by locals. View of the golden gate bridge. Mountian climbing gear.

  • yeah, I said the same thing he sounds just like salad fingers guy! ahhhh rusty spoons

  • Where can I get one of these... or show us how its made.... cheers from America

  • fucking nut job.

  • Only about 5 or 6 meters I think (16 - 17 feet). Too drunk at 3am to get much higher!
