Barangay Banaba, a village in the municipality of San Mateo is not exempted to disaster events and its increasing frequency. Flooding and riverbank erosion are constant threats to their properties, livelihood, environment and especially to their lives.
The evident vulnerable condition triggered the desire of the people to organize themselves and advocate environmental cause. This led to the formation of Buklod Tao, a peoples organization that strongly promotes Community Based Disaster Risk Management. For more than a decade, it has been engaged in efforts to build resilient communities putting forward the element of collective participation. From training facilitation, equipping and enhancement of mitigation structures, it is undeniable that they have championed in their vision.
Despite these accomplishments, the advocacy of multi-sectoral participation is an area that requires attention to achieve organizational strengthening and sustainability. The reality that disasters impacts are felt regardless of race, gender, age, educational background and financial status further affirms the need. Indeed, a non-prejudiced disaster risk management approach allowing the participation of children and youth is essential. The project aims to mobilize young people for capacity building which aims to achieve awareness raising, skills enhancement and values formation towards becoming empowered actors in disaster risk reduction.
