I like this melody better than the other one that you sometimes hear sung. Both are good, but I think this one was a Stephen Foster effort, wasn't it?

I still like how people hate each other over this stuff. No matter which side you prefered, all the people involved are long dead and it's over. Hating people over where they happen to live or which side they liked most way back when is kinda stupid.

It is astonishing at this late date, w/ so many militant secularists lying about what our nation is & always has been, how utterly soaked in the Bible our American culture has always been. This song w/ its ironic association b/t Lincoln & the real Father Abraham. Compare this w/ Lincoln's own subtle & deep association of our nation's struggle w/ the Biblical precedent in his Gettysburg Address. The subtle & tacitly understood Biblical references were like breathing for these people.
