Asadabad justice news: KRTA story, suicide bomber criminal trial and Kabul VIP visit, 26 Sept. 2011

The directors of Afghanistan's anti-terrorism departments and U.S. officials visit Asadabad, Kunar Province to discuss Kunar's progress in prosecuting insurgents. Next, a report on a criminal trial following a foiled suicide bomb attack. For officials' security, media were asked not to broadcast judges' names or photos. Two attackers, wearing burkhas, were killed after being detected by Afghan police: one detonated, the other was shot. Their handler was detained and sentenced to 18 years. The bombers' taxi driver was acquitted.

A political and judicial delegation from Kabul met with the provincial governor Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi. In the delegation was present the representative of the US judicial ministry David Sideman, Karl Kendal, adviser of the US foreign ministry, General Norullah, chief of the investigation in Kunar Sayed Tahir, chief of prosecutors Mohammad Soaib and commander of the Kunar PRT. The delegation discussed about the judicial system in Kunar province with Wahidi. Governor Wahidi was thankful for their visit to Kunar and reminded about the corruption which is amazingly decreasing and called it the result of the public trials, he also talked about political rights and asked the delegation to pay special attention to Kunar province. In the end of the meeting the delegation visited some places such as governor's house, guest house, court and other government organizations.

For the first time in Kunar province a suicide bomber received a long-term prison sentence. During the court proceedings, recording of the case and taking the names and photos of the judge was not allowed. The court started under the tight security of the police, the suicide bomber was captured while wearing a Burqa in Khas Kunar district. A total of four insurgents were involved, one of the insurgents exploded himself, another was killed by police, and the remaining two were arrested. Of the arrested accusers, one is the trainer of the suicide bombers and another one is a driver. During the court proceedings the prosecutor preceded the case and gave the information of what the accused said to him. He said these people were coming from Shonkri of Sarkani to Asadabad but police of the Khas Kunar made them stop there. He also demanded for the driver the long-term prison term but the defense lawyer of the suicide bomber demanded for the kindness on accusesed and said their trainer was compelled and he did the act he added that the accuser's father was kidnapped by the Pakistani Taliban and they wanted from him to do suicide attack but the prosecute refused all the defense lawyer's claims and said proves are clear and it is says that the accused had strong relations with Pakistani taliban already. In the end judge's verdict came out and sentenced Sohial Ahamad from Capadara district, for 18 years. Court attended by the delegation of the Kabul, governor of the Kunar province and other officials.
