Actually, the very nature of the way Linux, and consequently Mac, works makes it very difficult to infect with a virus although I believe Mac is more prone. The root/user hierachy prevents most standard attacks from working at all. The only really effective way to infect a linux PC, excusing some distro specific exploits, is to somehow convince a user to sign in as root and manually run the virus and at that point I would really chalk that up to user error, not so much a security gap in the OS.

IF Linux was mainstream, it would be attacked more, and not all versions of Linux would have a standard defense against all the possible attack algorithms...
Don't split hairs, just watch as Mac gets decimated when it hits 10% of the userbase...like smallpox blankets hitting Native Americans...
Linux's only hope is to never make it's interface mainstream-user friendly and moddable...that's it.

There is always a way for any type of security to be flawed. This can be said with Punkbuster, Steam, Norton, and the United State's Armed Forces.
