The Biochar Fund and its local partner ADAPEL implement a three-year project in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It aims to phase out slash-and-burn farming. 200 very poor farmers participate by introducing biochar in their soils.

The project is funded by the Congo Basin Forest Fund - a fund created by the British and Norwegian governments, hosted by the African Development Bank, and chaired by Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maathai, aimed at halting the deforestation of Central Africa's forests.

The project is being implemented under difficult circumstances, deep in the interior of the Congo (Equateur Province). Nonetheless, it is seen as a crucial pilot program because it unites the fight against deforestation, food insecurity and climate change.
