I decided to add more bioballs to the filter since it still had the space for more.

  • Quick reply. With adequate water changes many have gotten away from the use of carbon, With your tank being heavily planted I wondered what your nitrates generally ran and what was the trigger point for water changes. Keep the videos coming. I am purchasing that canister as it seemed to have more than enough room to add mech and biological filtration.

  • @TheWalk23 I never tested my water for nitrates because I'm sure the plants and bacteria in the substrate and canister took care of that for me. I do water changes on that tank once a month now because the small fish have such little impact on the waste levels. The plants do seem to like the fresh water too, they pearl every time after a water change. Yes that filter does have such open space for loads of filtration media.

  • Good video. I have been researching this canister filter and think I will buy. I have a 75 gal with two HOB of which I will replace one. Like the spray bar. Wondered why you went with bio balls in a canister, they are more effective in a wet dry application, instead of more ceramics. How long would you expect between the need to change out filter pads, and why are you using carbon ?

  • @TheWalk23 I was using bioballs because i wanted to try them out, I found out later that they aren't very effective in a canister. I was just using carbon to see how much cleaner my water would get and also to remove the smell from the water I only keep it in for a week or so because it removes the good stuff also. I would say changing the pad would depends on how much bio load your tank has. I change or clear my pads and stuff about every 3 months.

  • good video. i subbed. check mine out and please sub back

  • @bm20197 thank you, I subbed to you also.

  • alright dude just thought i would let u know that the peice of plastic in the uv light holding the bulb in place should be removed it could over heat and melt. good filter though i have the cf 500 and love it !!

  • Purigen is an excellent synthetic product, provided it's not saturated (with inorganics). Unlike carbon however, it can be recharged (bleach)! The Eheim media (round) is called "Substrat Pro" and has amazing surface area -- In fact, more area than the ceramic rings, but they are great too. Both are very effective.

Bio-balls are good for nitrogenous bacteria as well, but detritus can get trapped over time -- Rinsing Bio-Balls in tank water (during maintenance) is highly recommended.

  • I think the Eheim media from the video is a prefilter for your polyfoam media. I would place it at the bottom, then the foam, next the c-nodes for bio packed full and finally the chemical media of your choice. Think you would prolong the life of the foam and get better filtration. Just a suggestion but nice job. That is pretty good water flow.
