Clarks car was in trouble all weekend, it kept braking fuel injection pump drive belts. I think the throtttle went over centre and caused the engine to cut out and then come back on song, even Jim could not get it back foom a 150 mph spin on a damp track.

Chris Amon came out on the 40th anniversary of Clark's passing saying he believed the accident was due to a rear end shunt Clark had been in the previous week, in Barcelona, when Jackie Ickx ran into the lotus. Clark's car was not returned to the UK prior to the German race the following weekend. I find Amon's story to be much more plausible than the blown tire theory.
