Pilot:

Demi: [writhing and screaming in pain]

11 years ago...
Joe is ten years old and feeling very grown up. 'Mama, it's time for the eggs,' he says happily. 'Can I crack one?' Cass laughs. 'Sure, but only one.' She says. After they stir it all up and begin to fashion it into little balls, 4-year-old Demi runs in the door crying. 'Mommyy!' She cries, running into Cassandra's arms. Joe stares at her coldly and pries her out of Cassandra's arms. 'She is NOT your mom!' He yells at her face, causing Demi to cry more. Cass is outraged at Joe. 'Room. Now.' She says, hugging Demi once more, and smacking Joe's forehead on the way up.
That night, Joe creeps into his mom's room. It's very late; almost three. Cass always stayed up late and woke up early; Joe never found out why. 'Mommy?' He asks, climbing on her bed. 'Why did we adopt Demi?' This question has been on his mind for weeks. Why did they need Demetria, too?Wasn't he enough? Cassandra put downn her book and looked him in the eye. 'Because she's like me, Joseph,' she said seriously, wondering if he was still too young. But time is running out!, she told herself. He needs to know, 'She needs you to protect her, save her.' Joe is thouroughly confused but says nothing. 'Either that, or... or... you need.. to kill her. Joe. She needs to live a normal life, or die.'
That was Joe's last conversation with his mother.
