Regarding the comments about age . . . even when rehearing for his later films, Fred would literally wear out dancers who were less than half his age -- and keep going.
He may have seemed easy going, but when it came to his work the man was a perfectionist who was never fully satisfied with his performances. His drive to do his best may be the primary reason so many of us consider him to *be* the best.

I can't believe that people would thumb your comment down and 50bananasful's ignorant comment up; I'm an black fan of Fred Astaire too, but understanding the studio system of the time (and what could have happened to a performer if they didn't obey studio rules) and the fact that Mr. Astaire almost certainly was no racist himself, having worked with black performers since he was young, I believe he should be forgiven.
Plus, DLL was the film that introduced me to him. :)
