yeah he's gotta at least have a chip, cause all the powerstrokes iv ever owned if they didnt have a DPF filter they would only puff a bit if they were factory, my '04 F250 has a DPF filter on it right now and a bullydog power pup programer and in the race setting i can still blow smoke thru the filter, it ant much but it is black and it does roll.
