Manchester hasn't really changed except freezing cold call centres have replaced factories as workhouses - Those Rickenbacker chords rise above that. though, so long live Marr - and as for that yearn, that croon, those lyrics...I think it'd e an outsider's view to say that The Smiths are the best ever, but not an arrogant or valid one.

@nativesspoken chameleons made great songs! rem i dont know if they would be a counterpart though some songs sound vaguely similar. could kinda hear some radio free europe here. whenever i say i like the smiths people always follow with "you like the cure?"

The Smiths, the best, no 2nd or 3rd? I'd say as a rock fan of that specific generation of "looking for a new kind of music," The Smiths had a counterpart, as good or better and that was REM! There was also another little band from the same time period that had 3 monster first, second and third albums, U2...a lesser known band that may have been better then them all...The Chameleons UK!
