With the opening of the film "The Help," the work of Worcester State University's own Dr. Lisa Krissoff Boehm, "Making a Way out of No Way: African American Women and the Second Great Migration" (Mississippi, 2009), was featured on NPRs "The Takeaway" on August 12. Domestic work was just one of a host of jobs that helped propel many of the women out of the South permanently; the situation with work fueled the Second Great Migration, which Dr. Boehm documents in "Making a Way out of No Way." Overall six million African Americans, the majority of them women, moved from the South to the North--including Massachusetts--in the period of the migration, from 1940-1970. Boehm got in touch Kathryn Stockett, the author of "The Help," when her book first came out and they e-mailed back and forth. Boehm could not believe it--it was like her novel was the fiction version of the non-fiction book she wrote. Impressed by the woman that had worked at Boehm's grandparent's home, Esther Woods, she went on to do oral histories with Esther and forty other African American women who had worked as domestics.  She also worked with archival oral histories located at Baylor University in Waco, as the Oral History Fellow in 2007-2008.
