  • The definitive recording of this tune... the ultimate statement by the John Wayne of alto-players, Johnny Hodges.

    Duke was quoted in the liner notes of the original LP that contained this track, "Ellington Indigos," as referring to Hodges' performance with the most Elegant Oxymoron I have ever heard or read: "Excruciating Ecstasy."

    Very special track to me... it was played at my father's funeral, as it was his favorite piece of music in the whole world. And it came off spiritual, not sensual.
