N0 - it's not part of the original script. This part was written in for the 1973 TV adaptation of the play. In the original script she and Tom start arguing after the phone call...

I don't remember any of this scene being in the script...

Tom didn't even want to bring a gentleman caller home, he brought Jim only to shut his mother up. So he was quite "slipshod" in the process of getting a gentleman caller. And he can't go like, "Jim are you engaged/married?" because it would be very suspicious, and a bit weird. I mean, no one goes around asking their colleagues whether they're married.

If Tom had no idea that the guy was engaged, does Tenessee Williams want us to believe Tom's explanation "I don't go to work to find out things" or the mother's opinion that he was callous and ignorant?
-
I don't think Tom knew. He would never hurt his sister intentionally.
-
I wonder, in the last act, where he brings the guy for dinner and it turns out he's already engaged, do you think Tom already knows? Does he bring the guy over deliberately to piss his mother off?
-
Well. Yes. It's part of the play.

The mother is an unbelievable nag.
Wow. This is actually the best GM play (done by students) I've seen. Kudos!
