Percy Grainger playing his own version of the Rosenkavalier love duet on a Duo-Art piano roll. This is an augmented arrangement where Grainger has added extra notes to his initial recording - such as the long perforation chains that carry harmonies though pedal changes. Grainger was also involved in the editing of the dynamic coding for his rolls (the extra perforations down either side of the roll that control the Duo-Art mechanism rather than playing notes) to make sure the roll sounded as he wished. The end result is subtle and very clever, one of the finest Duo-Art rolls.

Recorded on a London-made Weber Duo-Art grand pianola piano, 23 July 2010.

(Version 2: adjusted zero-level and in stereo.)

  • This is indeed a modern perforation-accurate recut, which I perforated myself from an optical scan. It should be as accurate as the original roll, but in better condition and on better paper.

  • @risingchads and have you somehow reduced the top end intensities of the duo-art? This lacks the clangorous crashing at the top end that I usually hear with the duo-art.

  • @aardvaark069 This is simply how a well-regulated Duo-Art should play! There's been no reduction of dynamics: instead, care has been taken to set the regulator properly. Excessively-loud playing is a fault, commonly from setting the regulator springs too strong, so the piano picks rapidly up to its loudest playing level.

  • A very beautiful selection indeed.....

  • Great!! Very responsive and a delight to hear such a well regulated Duo-Art! The roll is superb. Thanks for posting.

  • I sthis a recent re-cut using new digital scanner tech? I am very impressed with this roll.

  • Very beautifull roll. My favorite opera. I'd give anything to have that roll on the Ampico system., so I could play it at least once a day. There is very little Strauss in the Ampico catalogue. So glad I discovered this Y-T vid. Thanks.
