@dhamma2008 Your devotion towards the Supreme Buddha should be achieved by correctly realizing his qualities with your own wisdom. It has to be a faith with proper reasons. Such faith is the true devotion (Saddha).
End of translation....

@dhamma2008 This is why our faithfulness towards the Supreme Buddha has to be an independent one. Let us say that someone told you that the Buddha was born in Sri Lanka. If you did not have a proper understanding about the ways of Buddhas, there is a possibility that you would see his statement to be true. Or in other words, your faith shall not dependent on others’ views.

@dhamma2008 He will also realize that not wanting, compassion, and wisdom are the sources of merits according to the Buddha’s teachings. This is the correct way that is taught in the ‘Kalama Sutta’. In fact, it does not say anything about ‘to not to believe even if the Supreme Buddha himself has said.’ Thus, no one can change our state of faithfulness if we have read that Sutta before and had a clear idea about it?

@dhamma2008 Then, the Buddha also mentioned that one shall check if not wanting (Alobha), compassion (Adveshaya) and wisdom (Amohaya) belong to wellbeing of people or not. A wise person will free himself from these craving, hatred, and ignorance by wisely clarifying the true nature, causing demerits, according to the Buddha’s teachings. He will also realize that not wanting, compassion, and wisdom are the sources of merits according to the Buddha’s teachings.

@dhamma2008 Kalama Sutta states:
Do not believe in something simply because it is in books, it came from generation to generation, some has told it, it matches well to my belief, it reasons well with arguments. Check if this craving (Lobha) belongs to merits or demerits. Check if hatred (Dvesha) and ignorance (Moha) belong to wellbeing of people or not. This is how the Supreme Buddha preached in the ‘Kalama Sutta’.

@dhamma2008 Once, when I was really happy about a discourse of the Supreme Buddha, another venerable monk told me not to become that much devoted even to these discourses because the Buddha himself had told us that we should not get devoted to anything, even if it is preached by the Buddha. Then, I told him that his belief is wrong and Buddha’s teaching is different than his knowledge about it. Then, he mentioned about ‘Kalama Sutta’. But, such thing is not in ‘Kalama Sutta’.

@dhamma2008 When we explain you the Buddha’s discourses, you have to listen to, understand it, and become devoted to its content. That is when you become a faithful devotee to the Supreme Buddha with proper reasons. Such devotion will also become an independent one. Then no one else could harm your devotion and make you weak with respect to the faith towards the Buddha. That is the state that you should achieve.

@dhamma2008 That is to give others this opportunity to learn what the Buddha taught us. Other reason is that let us say you will think in the following manner. “Ven. Gnanananda Thero other Thero mentioned it in this way.” And, that person becomes faithful to that venerable monk’s statement. Then, that faith does not become a stern one. That is because his belief is based on another person’s saying. The devotion has to be born in a different manner, as follows.

@kanwarharry Here is a close English translation (few posts due to limit in characters):
If we be pleased about the Supreme Buddha’s realization, it is called the ‘Saddha’ (faith). So, we should come to that state (faith) about the Buddha’s realization by learning about him and his teachings. It is not because various people say so. This was why we have translated the teachings of Buddha in the ‘Sutta Pitaka’ into Sinhala language with our compassion towards you.
