I believe that when this train was cut, with the Pioneer, the California Zephyr was made a daily train. Those 1997 cuts put Amtrak in a bad spot! I believe that the completion of the electrification of New Haven to Boston and the acquisition of the Acelas/HHP-8s contributed to the downfall of the Desert Wind! (and not taking the option of ordering 50 more Viewliner Sleepers.)

A paint scheme we'll never see again
one thing i love about the pepsi's is that it shows off the american side of the trains, it's a big mean locomotion machine. and if engines have to follow the FRA regulations, wouldnt this locomotive be the best, i mean, it even looks like a tank. what is the point of a slow high speed train like the acela that weighs as much as Manhattan to be disguised, when it is far easier to just use freight engines.

@jfsa380, most of the "Desert Wind" series I've posted uses this engine, because that was the assigned power during the early 90s. I think this engine was re-geared for passenger use, meaning the gear ratio is designed for high speed and fast acceleration instead of maximum torque and traction effort.
