Anyone whose body and mind are not in balance will have symptoms like sadness, fear, anger, unworthiness, arrogance, a feeling of being ill at ease, or a feeling of being unwell. A holistic approach to healing requires that we change the way we view these symptoms. We must recognize these symptoms not as problems but as signposts of imbalance that can start us along the journey to our healing. Ancient medical systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine, which have been in use for 5,000 years, have long recognized symptoms as indicators of imbalance. Western medicine, on the other hand, has focused its energy on suppressing those same symptoms under the mistaken belief that health is simply the absence of disease.
