Synopsis!
"The Victory Tour" was the biggest and final concert tour of the United States and Canada in 1984 by The Jacksons. Beginning July 6 and ending on December 9, the tour included 55 concerts to an audience of approximately 2 million. It was named after the newly released Jacksons' album Victory although none of the album's songs appear on the tour's set list (Marlon confirmed it was because Michael refused to rehearse or perform them). The tour reportedly grossed $175 million and set a new record for the then-largest grossing tour.
Following a controversy with the way tickets were purchased, lead-singer Michael Jackson donated his proceeds (approx. $5 million) from the tour to three charities, including the T.J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia and Cancer Research, The United Negro College Fund, and the Ronald McDonald Camp for Good Times.
The "Victory" tour, with the Jacksons, plays three sold-out dates (Aug. 17-10) at the Pontiac Silverdome. That year, Jackson's hair catches fire during a Pepsi commercial shoot.
Michael had 4 new dance moves invented for the tour: Moonwalk in place, Magic moonwalk, sidewalk in place, and forwards moonwalk. He was not allowed to use the sidewalk, as he was confined by his brothers wishes. The forwards moonwalk was not used, only in Dallas for one night. Plus, Billie Jean was not as polished due to this confinement, hence he had more freedom to choreograph his work on the BAD Tours and onward.
At the last show of the tour, performed at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Michael announced his split from The Jacksons during "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)".
Notable celebs who attended the show included: Emmanuel Lewis, Cindi Lauper, Steven Spielberg, Quincy Jones, Eric Estrada, Andy Warhol, Sir Paul McCartney, Julian and Sean Lennon, Yoko Ono, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson, Billy Joel, Brooke Shields, Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, James Brown, and Chuck Berry.
"Set List"
The set list included songs from the Jacksons albums Destiny and Triumph. Ironically the Victory album was not represented. There were also songs on the list from Jermaine's and Michael's solo careers. Michael's albums Off The Wall and Thriller were both represented.
It is worth noting that the set list did not include "Thriller" itself. Despite rumours suggesting Thriller was not included for spiritual reasons, Michael reportedly was not satisfied with the way the song sounded live. Eddie Van Halen joined Michael and his brothers onstage in Dallas, TX during the tour to perform his signature solo on the song "Beat It".
