Catherine Annette Hanshaw, born 1901, was one of the first great jazz singers although she never thought much of her own singing. In 1935, she was chosen America's most popular female singer in a national poll of radio listeners promoted by Radioland Magazine. Annette never appeared in movies although she had numerous offers, and her only appearance on film is the 1:43 clip of her singing We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye from Captain Henry's Maxwell House Showboat in 1933. She appeared on numerous radio shows for Maxwell House, Van Heusen shirts, Camel cigarettes, etc but left in 1936 at the height of her career to live with her husband, Pathe exec Wally Rose.

Body and Soul was first made famous by torch singer Libby Holman who sang it in the Broadway show, Three's a Crowd in 1930

  • Annette Hanshaw has truly stood the test of time, far beyond her departure from this earth. That is because she had all the goods: A lovely voice, a calm about her (never feeling she is pushing), perfect enunciation and great feeling for storytelling. It is interesting she chose to sing the second set of lyrics for the song. There are many versions of this song by many great singers and they are all worth a listen. I think the original Billie Holiday recording is definitive.

  • @waynebrasler Almost any recording Billie Holiday made was the definitive version. Check out her amazin' version of Can't Get Started With You which someone recently helped me "discover".

  • Beautiful. Just beautiful!! This is one for addind to my "favourites".

    Thank you for sharing.

  • My pleasure-glad you enjoyed.

  • Thank you for another tune from " the Voice of an Angel ".

  • always my pleasure-especially if its an Annette upload.

  • I LOVE THE "BODY AND SOUL," WERY NICE VOCALS....

  • Also, check out Billie Holiday's version to hear what I mean in terms of distinguishing a Pop stylist from a Jazz one -------------->>>>>>>

  • Sounds more like a Pop rather than Jazz singer, and there is more than just a distinction there... Beautiful voice, and great to hear this tune in its essentially original arrangement.

  • I read somewhere that arrangers, bandleaders, thought of her voice as another instrument. I "discovered" her on a library CD of music from 1930. I'm so happy that I did. She truly is unique. One of a kind.

  • Untill you tube I never heard of this wonderful singer. The microphone was new then but she new how to use it. Thanks to all you people who collected her records and present them here on YouTube. Folks like me can hear this great singer from the past.

  • @colinwells4 -- I agree. when I listen to her, I feel like I am in a small bar/club... enjoying a very intimate, almost seductive set (i.e., the kind where the audience "falls in love" with the performer). It almost seems like she is up there singing to all of us... to a small room full of people, many of us lonely hearts and bad luck cases. It's very haunting. I think I am in love with her voice ... xD

  • Very nice. Some of the lyrics I have never heard before but are great, and so is Annette.
