Okay well the fast tempo is interesting and sometimes it works. But on the whole, I have to say it's not for me. I have to say I'm not much of a Norrington fan. I've been to a few of his Beethoven performances and I didn't much like those either. But thanks for posting.

i'm sorry for accidentally deleting the comment of 00000ppp. it said: "possibly the ugliest performance of this beautiful piece ever. think cosima would have thrown him out of the house if wagner whould have given her this as a birthday present!"

this is a very interesting psychological reaction, a comprehensible conduct, but the consequences were (and are!) devastating! her personal sorrow of richard's death slowed down the tempi, and through the very slow tempi, many of the phrases collapse, and so do the emotions and thereby the music itself.

@00000ppp to my mind, cosimas instructions in bayreuth after richards death had some fatal consequences - they lead to a wrong perception of richard wagners music. in her unspeakable dolefulness (presumably), cosima lost to some extent the understanding for the philosophy and liveliness in her husbands works. she tried to go INTO the music, into the moment of wonderful music, tried to come closer to her deceased husband soul.

i think you want the conductor to feel every note very deep, that is surely important, but this is not the only principal point! he also should be full aware of the ingeniously inspired horizontal lines: the long phrases trail off in the slower versions which is certainly not wagners purpose! of course, wagners music is not carelessly, but its also not self-pitiful! it is aesthetic and profound, but not depressive, it is very affective and sometimes even transfiguring, but never burdensome...

in comparison, the slower interpretations are not only tiring - moreover they block you instead of encouriging and healing you! wagners music is very positiv, but many conductors make the mistake that they want to make everything sooo expressive. and if you listen to it attentively, then it simply seems boring or chintzy...
