Dawn Beach, mentioned in nearly all St. Maarten guide books as one of the most beautiful, with crystal clear waters and excellent snorkeling.
In late 2005 the Commissioner of Development AND Environment pushed against multiple objections to permit Columbia Sussex to build a Westin Resort and condo complex. This is his success story. I guess they will have to revize those guide books. - Submitted by Local Hero
I wrote about he rape of Dawn Beach in the papers and private eye. Only a bunker buster bomb can undo that now!

The rain on the opposite side from my house will hit the condos, building up pressure, and sooner or later that pressure will cause the condos to collapse onto the hotel.
There are also very little foundations for the hotel. with all the water, all the sand will move and effectively 'move' the hotel. think 10 years.
Get the message?
But yes, the hotel IS an eyesore I have a picture of the view in 2004 of the whole valley. Its amazing how much you can destroy an area.

I live there
Am currently there now.
Don't feel sorry for the locals though, feel sorry for the Westin.
Think Hurricanes.
They used dynotmite to 'dig' into the rock. The vibrations alone will have upset the rock there.
So, with new gaps in the rock, when there is a hurricane with lots of rain, you get the water flooding the valley.

What a shame for St. Maarten. Dawn Beach used to be so beautiful, like a Garden of Eden. *sigh*
