This photogate representing colorado took 5th in the nation at the TSA 2009 National Conference. It is run by the PIC16F877 to allow the display of some letters and numbers, each photogate has 4 optocouplers connected to a QUAD OR gate to allow for greater sensitivity, is able to take firmware upgrades, can run at a clock speed of 20MHz (is currently at 1MHz), and can be powered anywhere from 7-25V (currently has a 9V in the case)
Unfortunately, because the Microcontroller can only perform basic arithmetic and logic operations, the algorighm it uses to calculate speed takes longer to calculate when the object it's measuring is traveling at high velocities
