Avery's POV

The drive to the swim team championships was long and cramped. The 'quints', as everyone called us, well...we're pushing six one. And sitting with our legs bent for a six hour drive with no chance of straightening them out isn't comfortable. Sometimes I wish I was short, but my height has its perks.

"Are we almost there, Dad?" Evan asked from the very back. He was sitting on the driver's side, opposite me. "My legs are cramping."

"Twenty more minutes," Dad said for what seemed like the thousandth time. We were stuck in traffic. I guess everyone was heading to the casinos. The championships are in Tupelo. "I think there may be a wreck up the street."

"I hope it's not bad!" Lizzie exclaimed.

"I'm sure it's not sweetie," Dad said hastily. Lizzie was a lot like Mom. Very animal friendly and caring, and she was always worrying about others.

I heard a little rustling from next to me, and I looked down at Elizabeth as she hurried to lean over her bag and hold it down with a worried expression. "Lizzie, what's in the bag?" I asked as Dad's phone started ringing and he picked it up.

"Nothing," she chirped quickly. I raised an eyebrow at her.

"What do you mean Ginger isn't there?" Dad asked. Ginger was Lizzie's new kitten he bought for her a few days ago. "She was there this morning. Are you sure she isn't in the play pen or Lizzie's room?" Dad sounded worried, almost as worried as Lizzie looked. I put two and two together easily.

"Elizabeth," I said sternly. She looked up at me with wide eyes and tried to keep her bag from her. I simply pulled it from her arms and opened it. Ginger's gold eyes were staring up at me when I looked inside. She meowed loudly as she tried to get out. I let her, looking up at my dad. "Dad, Ginger's here. Lizzie brought her."

Dad took a second to wrap up his call before he finally took the ramp off the interstate. "Elizabeth, I said no pets were coming," he said sternly as he took a right onto another street that was lined with hotels and restaurants.

"But I wanted her here," she whined.

"Kitty," Mason giggled as Ginger hopped onto his lap in his car seat.

"I don't care that you wanted him here, young lady," Dad said firmly. "I'm the adult, and what I say goes." He turned into the parking lot of the hotel and parked. "Stay right here until I come back, then Lizzie and I are going to have a discussion about not following my rules."

Lizzie looked down as he opened his door and climbed out. I sighed, moving some of her hair behind her ear. She looked up at me nervously. I will admit she and my sisters didn't really get in trouble a lot; at least not as much as me and my brothers. We were a bit more...rebellious, but that comes with age. Allie and Abby were getting almost as bad as us now. Abby wanted to grow up too fast, what with makeup and tight clothing, while Allie wanted more freedom to go out with her guy friends and things along those lines. They didn't seem to realize that they were only fifteen.

"Why'd you do it, Lizzie Bay?" I asked softly.

"H-He's just a kitten," she whispered. "A-And he kept trying to crawl into my bag, so I just brought him. I didn't want to leave him, Ave."

My brothers and I climbed out of the vehicle with that, groaning as we stretched our arms high above our heads simultaneously. Joints popped and muscled stretched audibly as we relieved the tension that had been built up. Allie slid over the seat and climbed out, followed by Abby. They stretched the same as us then looked around. Dad came marching out a second later with a bellhop, pushing three luggage trolleys.

"Avery, Chris, Evan and Mason are sharing a room," Dad announced, handing me a room key, and added, "Girls, the same for you." Allie took that key before she began walking towards the front door of the hotel. Lizzie, who had retrieved Ginger from Mason, tried to slip in between her older sisters but was quickly caught by Dad. "Oh no, young lady, you're coming with me."

We headed upstairs, Mason asking for 'kitty' every few seconds. Dad took Ginger from Lizzie and gave it to Evan, who was also holding our little brother. "You can have him back later," Dad told her, not
wanting to see the sadness there. He would be seeing a lot more than just sadness in a few minutes.
