Hey you, klezmer, pick up your fiddle,
play your music,
and well dance the new sher.1
Well spin around in a karahod,2
and our hearts will rejoice,
whenever the new sher is danced.
Higher, higher, Grandpa Elya leaps
straight up to the ceiling.
He wants to enjoy life fully.
And Grandma Sosye beams with joy.
Our enemies can go to hell,
for were going to dance the new sher.
Nu, see, just see how everyone is happy,
how they spin,
and how they tap their feet.
The heart is breaking
but still begs to dance,
for when we dance, life becomes so sweet.
Now we are all happy.
We will no longer be sad.
Because soon the bride will be seated,
and then we will dance the new sher.
What good will all the worrying do for you,
when your heart is heavy?
Better hope, brother, that by tomorrow
we will all dance the new sher together!
1 A lively party or celebration dance
2 A type of a circle dance
We had one of those little 5" 78s on red plastic with an instrumental version of this (with some strange shifts in harmony, from minor to major). It had no label, and I didn't manage to discover the name of the piece until ten or so years ago. The flip side was called something like "Young People's' March — it's been gone for years.
Well, to make it short, thanks for posting this. And get those kids off my lawn!

This brings back such memories. I have Corety Breier to thank for reminding me of my roots. Love it.

@gabrielapetrie That was the Abe Ellstein version from 1940 and the male vocal is Seymour Rechtzeit. It's available on a collection titled "Klezmer" from the "Yazoo" label.

My favorite version of this song was billed as "The Bagelman Sisters" and featured a male, third vocalist. I can't find any references to it any place, but I know I'm not good at looking up klezmer (I can't find any of the klezmer I was listening to in the late 1990's). But anyways, this is a great fun song. I'll never forget this song.

Their yiddish repertoire is impressive.
Yet, I feel, many of their early recordings
and performances have been lost and
yet to be rediscovered.
