Carl (Buscemi) and Grimsrud (Stormare) believed that the ransom was $80,000 (They would then give half of to Jerry before splitting it into $20,000 each). Jerry, however, told Wade (his father-in-law) that the ransom was $1,000,000, so he could pocket $920,000 instead of just $40,000. Carl, shocked to see that its actually a million, takes $40,000 out to give Grimsrud his "half", then buries it so he can get the rest later.

"You fffffffffffuuuuuckin' SHOT ME!"
Buscemi is so good in this. His frustrated interactions with that bear of a partner and his later argument with him are the perfect mix of black comedy and the seriousness of a thriller.
