I bought this kids glockenspiel for a £1 yesterday and performed a "MIDI conversion" using 8 solenoids, PIC16F688 microcontroller, TIP120 transistors and 6N139 isolator. Looks like I might have to work on the tuning though.... MIDI sequenced from REAPER on a PC - if glock was actually in tune I might have spent more time on the music :)

  • Excellent! Those solenoids look great (many uses)

I quite like the rickety tuning but it would be very interesting with a 'quality' xylophone. However, you have got a successful and groovily multi-coloured prototype.

p.s re.solenoid use, this is actually a bit spooky as last night I was watching "No Country For Old Men" (Coen Bros) in which a deranged assassin uses a cattle stun gun to kill (shoots a rod into a forehead). Similar effect to your solenoid but rather anti-social in comparison.

  • Pretty cool stuff!
