Katie Smith, Floyd Medical Center Hero

Katie Smith, a registered nurse on the Medical Pulmonary Unit (4 Central), was surprised recently by her family, friends, the Floyd Hero Committee and her co-workers. She is Floyd's newest Hero.

Sonny Rigas, senior vice president and chief operating officer, presented Katie with the award on behalf of the Floyd Hero Committee and spoke about all the reasons she was nominated.

Her nominator, Cathy McDonald, a co-worker, says she admires Katie's commitment, positive attitude and teamwork.

"Katie has a great work ethic and is wonderful at removing barriers so the unit can meet 2 p.m. discharge goals," she says.

Lee Ann Hufford, Katie's manager, describes her as a bright, shining light with a can-do attitude.

"I have seen Katie tackle many issues head on and gain her co-workers' trust, respect and support through coaching. She always gives 110 percent to her patients, projects, physicians and co-workers," says Lee Ann.

A Floyd employee for three years, Katie earned her associate's degree in nursing from Northeast Alabama Community College, Rainsville. A member of the Alabama Nursing Association and the Georgia Nursing Association, she attends Fort Payne Family Worship Center.

"Thank you for such a great honor," Katie says.

To earn this honorable distinction employees perform above and beyond their daily responsibilities by consistently meeting Floyd's Service Standards and by serving as a role model at work and in the community. A Floyd Hero exhibits "star quality" and serves as a primary example to others.
