You are right on the broomstick analogy.

  • Micklethwaite and his co-author make this case in their book, God Is Back. However, what they do is throw together examples from the poorer half of the world, where theistic religion is vigorous, with scarps about the US, which they misinterpet as exhibiting a resurgence of religiosity. All recent quality research shows a decline in the US.

  • At an LSE Meeting recently, John Gray & John Micklethwaite [the new editor of the Economist] were supposed to debate over the new rise in religion but they agreed that it was a plain fact. It was not clear to me why they thought their thesis was factual.

I think you are right to say that the old theory of slow decline is the case.
