Edward Manukyan interviewed on Kentron TV's "Sksenq Norits" morning show before his 2010 tour in Armenia. The guests also include soprano Lyndi Williams and pianist Tatevik Ayvazyan.

The English subtitles are as follows:

HOST: It was interesting for me to note that although all of your work is done in the United States, the Eastern influence, particularly the Armenian influence, still dominates in your music. Does that have a specific purpose or does it come spontaneously.

MANUKYAN: You know, when a person gets uprooted from his native culture -- and it's about a decade I have been away from Armenia -- there is often an inner urge to compensate for the loss. In each person it is expressed differently, but if you're a musician, there is a yearning to impart in yourself the musical heritage of your people. In my case, specifically, I have wished to use the characteristics of Armenian folk melodies, those building blocks with which you can compose symphonies and other large-scale works. Of course, that sort of work was done with great brilliance by Aram Khachaturian. The generations that came after him have not even begun to scratch the surface of the immense richness passed down to us. In Eastern music there is such a lush array of colors that it could give a great deal of elegance and beauty to contemporary music.

  • I have the score of Manukyan's "Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano". Hearing him speak helps me understand his music better. One thing I realize is that intellectual minds are just as capable of creating passionate music. Bravo from Slovenia!
