i believe your right and since raziel was thrown into the abyss his body was deteriorated and partially devolved but to a lesser state than what janus and his brothers went through and the heart is what kept kain mostly human when his creations/sons became creatures

Kain carries the heart of a member of the original vampire race about in his chest (as revealed in "LOK:defiance") . That could be the reason he stays mostly human looking.

not exactly...If i remember right, Kain kept his normal hands in BO1 right? I'm assuming the 3 claws are part of the degeneration of the curse that overtook all Kain gave the dark arts to, hence why all the brothers look really screwed up in SR1. Raziel was spared this by being tossed into the abyss. I have no idea, however, on how Kain fails to degenerate further, all i know is he looks a whole lot different in SR1 than BO1. maybe that's as far as his degeneration will go?

raziel isn't an elder vampire. maybe he is kain's right hand but he was made recently and i can assure he had 3 not 5. story hole

thats probably part of the "evolution" that occurs while aging as a vampire (bare in mind that this takes place before Soul Reaver 1 yet after Blood Omen 1)
