These shortcuts are quite nice! But in a teaching context, it has to be taken care that a consistent/comprehensive explanation is clear first.

those simple things should be teached in all the schools! I'm in the college now and this is a HUGE thing to quickly do counts in calculus or algebra

If you think about it, 2x+ something = 8 4x + something = 16
the only "something" that you can have is zero. Just divide the second equation by 2 and subtract one equation from the other
