In 2010, we followed University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) Computer Science students Kieran Nichols of Bath, Maine and Cooper Archard of Rangeley, Maine at their student internship with the Maine Dept. of Health & Human Services (DHHS) MaineCare Division in Augusta, located 40 minutes from campus. The internship is arranged through the Maine Health Research Institute, directed by UMF Professor of Business Economics Dr. Sheen Bunnell. The University has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with the Maine DHHS and the state agency has employed a number of UMF interns over the years. Under the guidance of their on-site supervisors, Emily Bean and Carol Bean, Kieran and Cooper gained valuable hands-on experience as they applied the computer science theories they learned in the classroom to real-world projects in the growing health care field. At Farmington, all students are encouraged to participate in internships like this as a way for students to put classroom theory into practice while strengthening their resume and making valuable professional contacts. In fact, in any given semester about 70% of all Farmington students are participating in some sort of hands-on learning experience. Because of this, Farmington offers a number of opportunities that will help you connect your classroom studies to what could be your future work. It should also be noted that Maine DHHS Supervisor Emily Bean is a recent Farmington graduate (Community Health Education) who also interned at the DHHS while a student. She was hired by the agency shortly after graduation.
