Dastangoi is a form of storytelling, a specific form of it which has been honed for centuries by practitioners. It is also a form of theatre, which relies on intense performances by actors. It can be used to perform traditional stories, created by the Dastangos of the past and can also be successfully used to tell contemporary stories. As a performing art, it extends the boundaries of poetic recitation and takes it to the level of a performance; as a form of narration, it extends to dramatized rendition; and as a form of storytelling, it extends to drama through the device of using two actors.

As a form that was practised vigourously for several centuries and was lost briefly, its resurrection has brought it to centrestage instantaneously. Its immense popularity is attributed to the simplicity of its form, ability to reach out to and involve audiences, and of course, the stellar performances by its practitioners of which there are only a handful.

Mahmood Farooqui, Danish Husain and Anusha Rizvi are at the core of the troupe, Dastak. The group is mentored by the noted Urdu scholar and writer Shamsur Rahman Faruqi.
