Here is a live performance of the song 'The Unwritten Law', with Ian Paice's drum solo included within the song. This was recorded at the FCP Stadium in Pforzheim, Germany, on August 30th 1987. It's an extremly good quality audience recording, from the bootleg titled 'Mein Kampf'.

Note that this is NOT a Live VIDEO, but audio of a live performance of the song, combined with a nice picture slideshow from the reunion years w. Gillan, during the 1984-1988 period. Not a lot of bands has been rocking like Deep Purple for almost 42 years now.

Also note that any anti-Ian Gillan or Steve Morse OR related comments will be deleted emediatly. I'm done with Blackmore purists giving him all the credit, and spamming comment sections with anti-Gillan stuff, just because Gillan can't sing like he did in 1970, or Steve Morse because he doesn't copy Blackmore's playing, or because he replaced Ritchie etc.
I'm a fan of all eras of Deep Purple. MK.1 to the present MK.8, but MK.II will always be THE best incarnation of the band. Everyone that has been a part of Deep Purple from the past to present has brought something uniqe to the band and sound.

Enjoy!

  • Ian had trouble with the vocals the entire tour and this is no exception. As a result, this song never realized its live potential. There were a few nights when Ian was spot on, but it's a handful at best.

  • @JasonHi Yes, Ian recently said that he once again had vocal nodes, like back in the Sabbath days, in 1987-88. Ian definatly did his best, and there were some nights that were better than others of course. This song in general, was at Gillan's vocal limit, so it's strange that it was played EVERY night in 1987. In 1988 it was gone from the set, it took it's toll on his voice. It was also the third song in the set, so it made Gillan strugge a bit throughout the rest of the gigs unfortunatly.

  • Must have been a big open air festival (called Monsters of Rock in some sources, but they didn't play at the Mother-festival in England did they?!?!) quite to the end of the 87 tour. I think you can hear that too, because there is no echoing from the walls of the venue etc

  • @Silber7

Yes, Purple toured with this Monsters Of Rock type of tour, I'm not sure if the Pforzheim gig is from one of those though.

Anyone that knows where the last show in 1987 was played, where Ritchie broke one of his fingers, when throwing his guitar into the air? The rest of the 'HOBL' tour was cancelled, that is all I know. I have the Verona show from 1987, which is the last recording that has surfaced from the 'HOBL' tour, but the band played a full concert there, so....

  • @luk197900 Wrong answer! Bye bye! ;)

  • @Silber7 It was a Monsters of Rock (open air) concert. I remember Halloween, Metallica and Dio performing before Deep Purple. By the time Deep Purple started, most people in the audience seemed a bit stoned, so it was amazingly easy to get to the front. Deep Purple's performance was amazing despite Ian Gillans slight vocal tiredness.

  • PAICE the BEST!!!!

  • i was there, i was 16

  • The Pforzheim Gig in 1987 was part oder the official "Monsters Of Rock".

But Ian Gillan had a very bad day. Sadly.

  • @SilverTounge85 Yeah what a bummer. I had 3rd row seats to see them in Florida when this happened Devistating news to say the least !!

  • This was an awesome Concert, Deep Purple finished the night off with the most awesome laser light show, it was in the soccer arena, a bowl, with dirt sides and telephone poles all around that the laser show was reflected off of. It was by far the best concert I've ever been to.

  • This is just great, Ian Paice at his best probably. I have been following them since i was 11 years old in 1977. my last consert with them was i Langesund Norway 08.07.10. Still alive and kickin, great sound and you can see that they love playing both the new and the old stuff, it`s great to see after all theese years that they don`t get tired of playing live, beacuse that is when they are at their best, like it has been always:))
