I'm sure it's a common breed in the region of Macedonia. However, according to the FCI (Federation Cynologique International), which sets breed standards and names, only recognizes the Sarplaninac. It is designated as coming from Serbia/Macedonia. The FCI also gives the alternative name "Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog".
