Oscillating Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical experiments with interesting visual effects. As requested by Youtube, the suitable musical support, "Crawling, remix" performed by Linkin Park has been removed.

  • and how did you do it?

  • It results from the mixing of 4 solutions, prepared exclusively with deionized H2O (without Cl-):

    - 4.16g malonic acid/50mL H2O (0.8M)

    - 9.05g NaBrO3/50mL H2O (1.2M)

    - 3.2mL conc H2SO4/46.8 mL H2O (1.2M)

    - 278mg of FeSO4.7H2O + 595mg of o-phenanthroline/50mL H2O (0.02M ferroin)

An equal amount of each solution is poured in a petri dish, on an overhead projector (Be careful, the reaction produces Br2).

Destroy by pouring in a sodium thiosulfate solution prior to put it in the toxic waste.

  • what is the title of the music?

  • This is a video which all creationists should watch. Belousov was ridiculed when he submitted this paper as order with no guiding hand was "contrary to the laws of physics" yet it is thought that this principle, predicted by Turing, could be a determining factor of how order arose from the inanimate to produce the first life. Belousov was so crushed that he actually gave up science after this rejection. He had no access to Turing's work, as it was the beginning of the cold war. Go science.

  • this reaction made me go hard
