INDIA'S WORLD
Session II - Literature, Culture, and Media
May 10-11, 2011:
In this, the 24th Social Research conference, experts discussed key issues of contemporary Indian life—government, economy, policy, and culture. This public conference aimed to engage both speakers and the audience in conversation about the ways in which India is influenced by the world—and the world by India.
Sheldon Pollock, William B. Ransford Professor of Sanskrit and Indian Studies, Department of Middle East, South Asian, and African Studies at Columbia University gave a talk on "Crisis in the Classics."
Lawrence Cohen, Professor of Social Cultural Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, spoke on "Accusations of Illiteracy and the Medicine of the Organ."
Ranjani Mazumdar, Independent Filmmaker, Associate Professor of Cinema Studies at the School of Art and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, discussed "Terrorism, Conspiracy, and Surveillance in Bombay's Urban Cinema."
Wendy Doniger, Mircea Eliade Distinguished Service Professor of the History of Religions at the University of Chicago Divinity School lectured on "Kama to Karma: The Resurgence of Puritanism in Contemporary India."
The session was moderated by Vyjayanthi Rao, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at The New School for Social Research. Q&A followed the discussion.
The Center for Public Scholarship in collaboration with the India China Institute and the conference was made possible with generous support from the Ford Foundation.

Wendy Doniger has just tried to twist the facts and show them in a light that synchronizes with the western evangelists. The so called scholars are 80% showoff and 20% work.
