Nick Reynolds (1933-2008) of the original Kingston Trio performs a vocal solo accompanied by Triomates Dave Guard and Bob Shane on guitars and David Wheat on bass. The song is a reworking by Irving Burgie of the American folk tune "900 Miles." Burgie is best known as "The Father of Modern Calypso," having written 34 songs recorded by Harry Belafonte, including eight of the eleven on Belafonte's landmark "Calypso" album of 1956, the first album ever to sell a certified million copies. "Day-O [The Banana Boat Song]" and "Jamaica Farewell" are probably the most enduring of Burgie's songs; he also wrote several other songs for the Kingston Trio besides "The Wanderer."

Nick Reynolds was the rhythm and the heart of the Kingston Trio, for a time the most successful and popular vocal group in the world and certainly a transformative force in world music. Reynolds' soaring tenor and supersonic rhythm strumming gave the high-energy Trio its musical foundation, and as this video attests, he was a superlative solo vocalist as well. Nick was also to the end of his days an outgoing and engaging man whose greatest legacy may well be his personal warmth and genuineness - and his ability to touch those of us lucky enough to have met him. Godspeed, Nick Reynolds!

  • thank you..he was a friend and this song i play often by myself on the front porch in NH.....and in front of others as well.

Nice of you to add this to YouTube........a treasure of a tune

Is that Timothy B Schmit in the last photo with his hand on his shoulder? Sure looks like him, from the Eagles

  • @lytfoot123 - Indeed it is Timothy B, who was a major fan of the KT when he was growing up and especially NR. There's a story behind it - you can find it and much more on my NR memorial site. Go to Blogspot.com and look for "Remembering Nick Reynolds." Thanks for the comment and for remembering Nick!

  • @lytfoot123

it's a fantastic song, do you happen to know where i can find the chords to it?

  • @theemptyminded -Sure! No HTML here so - 1. go to kingstontrioplace ( it is a dot c o m); 2. click on "message boards" and then on "Musician's Rendezvous." 3. Scroll down to 5/23/2010 and you'll find a thread in which someone asks for the chords to the song and gets several complete replies.
