A short parody of the film "The Hunt for the Red October", that me and some friends made during some summer vacations, somewhere in northern Portugal, in 1992.
The film was made in 2 days and was not edited at all, except for some sound tracks extracted from the original film. The interior of the submarine scenes have this "red light" ambiance, which was made with an improvised filter; a transparent red plastic disc, which was cut out of a chocolate box and fitted in front of the lens.
All underwater scenes were actually filmed underwater, in a large stone tank we had. This was entirely made with a camcorder inside an aquarium, sometimes at the risk of sinking the whole lot! The submarine model was battery operated, with a small electric engine taken from a toy and some very sketchy wiring. The blue plastic submarine hull was made out of a "Sun" dish-washing powder container and the turret was made out of a cup measure, from a box of laundry detergent. The propeller (I kid you not) was cut out of a beer can, and then adjusted to create the twisted blades - it actually worked. Notice the small switch on top of the turret, taken from a lamp, to switch the engine on and off (that's supposed to be the Snorkel) and the periscope, which is...a toothpick.
The amazing thing is, the submarine was carefully balanced and it floated really well, above and under water. That darn electric engine kept functioning during an entire month, until it eventually failed (probably due to the fact that it was soaking wet everytime and rusted to the core). The batteries lasted even less, but still, that Blue September Sub had the ride of its life. The green torpedo attacking the sub was made of green plasticine and fixed in front of the camera with some flexible wire. The whole thing is not very believable, but, what the hell! It was fun to make.
Good days, when kids had imagination and initiative to create new stuff out of whatever they had at hand, just for fun. Thank god we didn't have any videogames there.

  • Good job! Actors - super! Effects - super! It would be good, if you make a sequel.
