Bit of a cheesy commercial but cool boats nonetheless. I've had two straight 6 tower of power motors (68 1000 & 69 1000 SS) and they were brilliant motors. Well made. The 1000SS is still in my garden just waiting for powder coating after being rebuilt back to showroom condition.
It isn't going back on my boat though, got a '99 135 EFI just ready to fit :) Should move my 16 footer quite well :p
@Jake45499 i agree on you with that. alot of the optis aren't holding up and neither are the verado's...its a shame that its happening to an american company. i try to buy american but i don't want to waste my money. i own an evinrude and i'm very happy with it. at least it's american.
also the older 2 strokes from mercury are made very well. the traditional ones or the efi's. i had a 9.8 hp tohatsu 2 stroke which is a mercury motor and it was bullet proof...had over 1,000 hours when i sold it
@Jake45499 the smaller 4 strokes from merc are solid, the ones up to 115 hp. come to the verado and commercial fishermen and professional guides up by me in nj are seeing loss of compression at only 5k hours. thats not alot of hours for a motor used almost every day. all manufacturers will have products with flaws that eventually get fixed. the evinrude ficht was known as a time bomb but in 02' they were fixed by bombardier. i own an 03' ficht and it's given me many hours of reliable service
@Jake45499 how come so many of the optis are breaking down up here in nj because of compressors, high/low pressure fuel pumps, and belts failing? out on the ocean people don't want that from a motor they spend thousands on. and the opti's i'm seeing break down aren't poorly maintained outboards, they get serviced regularly and i know the people that own them and they use the right merc oil and buy good gas.
