The base of the tower was severely damaged during a PC derailment in 1974. It was rebuilt and presumably electrified at that time. Only one or two of the levers was "Armstrong" after that-the rest were just electric switches. The two other tracks that made up the diamond were removed in 1987 and the tower was closed by CSX in the fall of 1987 and moved to the Museum the following year.

I wouldn't know either, but if it was the early 70s then it would pretty much have to be the Penn Central; any later it would probably be Conrail.

The tower was not removed but hit by a train when it jumped the tracks back in late 70's or early 80's.

The tower still is together and sits at the Saginaw railway museum on Maple st. in Saginaw from what I was told....

Damn if this isn't one of the most quintessential shots in railroading; LIMA superpower, plenty of whistle and bell, a diamond, and crossing flashers to boot. 5*'s.

Thanks! this daimonds half of what it once was when the 1225 was new there was a tower and manualy operated gates. Back then she would have been crossing the diamond in the other direction.

Wow, shame none of that remains. Who was responsible for their removal? CSX?

I believe it disapeared pre CSX may have been early 70's but don't know and will try and find out might have been something to do with Penn Central???
