2008 Houston Juneteenth Multicultural Health Fair

On June 21, 2008, the city of Houston hosted its 2nd Annual Juneteenth Multicultural Health Fair at Discovery Green Park. The 2nd Annual Houston Juneteenth Multicultural Health Festival (HJMHF) is an annual family festival supported by Houston Mayor Bill White, the HJMHF has goals to unite Houston's multicultural communities to elevate the importance of living an active, healthy lifestyle and help eliminate Houston's ranking on the national "Fattest Cities in America" list compiled by Men's Fitness Magazine.




The mission is to bring awareness of the top 10 leading causes of death among African Americans, Hispanics and other ethnic groups, encourage early testing and the need to adopt an active, healthy lifestyle to preserve each culture's generation by being healthier. There were numerous health care providers doing stress test, blood test, blood pressure testing, just to name a few. Thousands brave the heat as they were eager to seek valuable health information.




H-E-B hosted the Food Zone area where many cultural foods were provided with a twist. Each food provider was challenged to offer healthy foods, healthier preparations a healthy alternative. Mi Tienda partners provided several tasty items such as sliced papaya, sliced pineapple, aquas frescas, sliced watermelon, Mexican sodas and Mexican frozen fruits. H-E-B #540 Gulfgate team provides the food for H-E-B with corn in a cup, turkey legs, hotdogs and corndogs.




Representative Al Edwards was in attendance, who was just twice elected to represent district 148 in the Texas state house of representatives. Edwards is also responsible for getting legislation passed to have Juneteenth recognized as a Texas holiday.
