For those of a certain age, these miniature engineering marvels predated the Game boys that followed. This video includes working shots of classics such as "Fruit Machine" , "Time up", "The Derby", ( If anyone knows how this one works inside they will answer one of the mysteries I`ve been trying to solve since childhood! ), "Pinball" and "Rally" . Sorry, I`ve not got the classic of them all, "Cup Final" on here.

  • The Derby works by having a metal disk which moves around the track (controlled by the player). The horses are all magnets which are attracted to four points on the disk. As the disk moves, it sometimes drags against the sides of the track, making it turn, so the horse that finishes first (closest to the left of the disk at the end) is random. These games were true innovation.

  • @TMOvids

    Thanks !!

  • HI THERE , THE DERBY WORKS WITH A MAGNETIC SPINNING SYSTEM INSIDE.

I USED TO HAVE THEM ALL!

    GREETINGS FROM ARGENTINA,

  • @HeavyMetalPress Hello and thanks !

  • GREAT stuff.

These things were legendary and soo many of em and they were al built like tanks.

I still have one from 1975 and it still works.

Its the blue one where you have to guide the balls through these ledges .....left/right/left/right and into the score slots.

Always wanted the windup ones though like te motor bike one.

Happy days, cheers for the vid.

  • Thanks for the comments !!

Now, has anyone out there ever taken the horse racing one apart, I would love to see how it works inside !!! Has alwasy been a mystery to me !!

  • I dug out my old "Pile Up" from years ago, still works as well as ever!

  • Brilliant love it .Little did I know that I learned to drive on the one with car !!!!

  • I loved pocketeers, I can listen to the clockwork noise of my one & it just takes me back to being a kid

  • Love the vid... a real time warp for me too.

I had the "Grand Prix" version of "The Derby" and was likewise intrigued and mystified as to how it worked. Did you ever discover the actual mechanical system and how, every time, the winners were (seemingly) random?

Saw one on eBay recently for £50 (not for taking apart to see the mechanics! ;-)

    Thanks for the memories!

LIKE THE DERBY, PICK A CAR AND A NUMBER OF LAPS, SEE WHO WINS.

  • @Shicky256

    JUST DRIVING IT... NO RACE.
