Probationary FF's practice the Columbus Ohio Drill witch sadly claimed one of their own John Nance in 1987. This solution was developed in his honor and has been adopted as part of Pawtucket FD Rhode Island RIT Training shortly after it was discovered.

  • wow this is not a good way but never seen it done better with rope and a handcuff knot

  • Not a Good Way ?

I am familiar with the several different ropes methods. This is a rapid way of getting firefighter who is in need of a guick lift from a collapse etc.

  • Glad to share with others

  • Yes, I'm in my 15th year with the City of Pawtucket RI. I'm currently assigned to Tower Lad 1. I started in the Fire Service back in 1984 and have been hooked ever since. I feel you should never stop pick'in each others brain and sharing new tricks & methods that allow you to do your job easier & safer.

  • This will work for a general floor collapse. John fell through the floor that was previously weakened and ran out of air. He was disoriented and couldn't climb the ladder that was lowered to him. He actually was trying to climb the opposite side of the ladder and couldn't get up. He couldn't hook up an air bottle that was given to him. Hypoxia wins on this folks. When you can't think straight you can't act straight. Chainsaws didn't work that is why rescues carry electric saws now. Ohshit!

  • There are many solutions. Good points though. If the FF is unable to help, you need to send one or two FF's down. One way is to have the FF's slide down a hose like you would a fire pole. They then can attach a rope to the victim using a hand cuff knot or convert the downed ff's scba into a harness and attach a rope though the top of both shoulder straps. The whole time they have a charged hose line to fight fire. The two can then be pulled out of the hole using the hose as seen in the video.

  • wut i ment to say its not good because you have to rely on the firefighters grip to get him out he could easily become uncounscious and i have done this drill now and it also takes a hose away to fight fire with instead of just using a rope.

  • for those of you that say this is not a good way your wrong sure there are better ways but in a mayday situation there are no good ways as long as get the downed firefighter out then thats all that counts

  • Well that's true.

  • yes i do agree this would work but there are better ways to put it on th victim i could see if he where aware of his suroundings. but this limits fire attack as well i could work but you would need the right situations.

  • Yep,So are you a Firefighter?
